Influence of Anion Structure on the Liquid-Liquid Equilibria of 1-Ethyl-3-methyl-imidazolium Cation Based Ionic Liquid-Hydrocarbon Binary Systems

ABSTRACT
Binary liquid-liquid phase equilibria for 15 systems containing an ionic liquid (1-ethyl-3-methyl-imidazolium thiocyanate, 1-ethyl-3-methyl-imidazolium trifluoroacetate, 1-ethyl-3-methyl-imidazolium trifluoromethanesulfonate) with a hydrocarbon (n-hexane, n-heptane, cyclohexane, benzene, toluene) were measured using dynamic method. The influence of the anion structure of 1-ethyl-3-methyl-imidazolium cation based ionic liquids on solubility of aliphatic and aromatic hydrocarbons is discussed. The liquid-liquid solubility data are reported only for the ionic-liquid-rich side of the phase diagram. It was found that the solubility of investigated hydrocarbons is the highest for ionic liquid with trifluoromethanesulfonate anion and the lowest for 1-ethyl-3-methyl-imidazolium thiocyanate.
