Liquid-Liquid Extraction of Biobased Isobutanol from an Aqueous Solution

ABSTRACT
The liquid-liquid extraction process was simple and low cost with good energy consumption. Cyclopentanol, 2-methyl-2-butanol, and valeraldehyde as extractants were investigated. The initial concentration of isobutanol was 22 g/L. The extraction efficiency of isobutanol was greatly influenced by the quantities of extractants and temperature. Improving the concentration of extractants increased the recovery of isobutanol but reduced the dehydration ratio. Valeraldehyde was concluded to be the most suitable extractant. When valeraldehyde was used as extractant, 98.49 wt % of isobutanol from aqueous solution could be recovered at the aqueous solution-extractant mass ratio of 1:3 at 298.15 K. The highest dehydration ratio of valeraldehyde was 99.18%. The extraction process performed by valeraldehyde was exothermic. R (318.15 K) less than R (308.15 K) less than R (298.15 K) was obtained when valeraldehyde was employed.
