Thermodynamic and phase diagram investigations of UF4 in (Li0.59K0.41)Cl melt

ABSTRACT
The enthalpy increments of UF4 compound were determined along with enthalpy of mixing of UF4 in (Li0.59K0.41)Cl melt. Enthalpy of mixing of lithium chloride and potassium chloride binary melt measured at 933 K, was used for determining ternary enthalpy of mixing. Gibbs energy of mixing of UF4(s) in lithium potassium chloride eutectic melt (LKE) was calculated from enthalpy of mixing data. These values were used for calculation of solubility limit of UF4 in LKE, at 933 K. DTA analysis of partial phase diagram along the UF4-LKE isopleth was carried out to determine the solubility limits of UF4 in LKE at different temperatures. The solubility limit of UF4 in LKE, ~5 mole % UF4 at 933 K, calculated from thermodynamic parameters showed reasonable agreement with DTA results.
