ABSTRACT
Butyl- and hexyloctamethylferrocenium salts with TFSA (bis(trifluoromethylsulfonyl)amide) and TCNE (tetracyanoethylene) were prepared and their thermal properties investigated by DSC measurement. The TFSA salts were ionic liquids with melting points of 34.4 deg C and 27.7 deg C, respectively. The TCNE salts were prepared by mixing alkyloctamethylferrocene and TCNE and then annealing. These salts exhibited high melting points of 100.2 deg C and 80.9 deg C, respectively, and were thermally unstable at higher temperatures. A butyloctamethylferrocenium salt with PCNP (pentacyanopropenide), obtained by reaction with TCNE under ambient conditions, was crystallographically characterized. The structure was severely disordered, consisting of alternate stacking of cations and anions.
