Dielectric constants and hydrogen bonded structures in amide-alcohol mixed solvents

ABSTRACT
Static dielectric constants of the binary mixtures of amides (formamide (FA), Nmethylformamide (NMF), N,N-dimethylformamide (DMF), and N,N-dimethylacetamide (DMA)) with alcohols (ethyl alcohol (EA) and ethylene glycol (EG)) over the entire composition range have been investigated at 30 oC. The concentration dependent excess dielectric constant of the binary mixtures reveal that the strength of H {bond molecular interactions of amide family molecules vary significantly with EA and EG molecules and these interactions are governed by their H!Vbonded self-association strength. The EA molecules form the strong H!Vbonded 1:1 complexes with FA and NMF, whereas EG molecules have the strong interactions only with NMF molecules and form stable adduct of molar ratio 2:1 of NMF to EG molecules. The DMF and DMA have comparative weak H!Vbonded interactions with both the EA and EG molecules, which is influenced by molecular size of these amides.
