Effective extraction of benzene and thiophene by novel deep eutectic solvents from hexane / aromatic mixture at different temperatures

ABSTRACT
The experimental liquid - liquid equilibria (LLE) for several systems containing (n-hexane + benzene + deep eutectic solvent), (n-hexane + thiophene + deep eutectic solvent) were measured at T = (298.15-318.15) K and atmospheric pressure. Two series of choline chloride based deep eutectic solvents (DESs) including (mono-, di- and tri-) ethanol amines and (mono-, di- and tri-) ethylene glycols were selected for this extraction. The experimental distribution coefficient and selectivity were calculated to evaluate the efficiency of the studied solvents for benzene or thiophene extraction from n-hexane. The obtained LLE results show that selectivity decreases with increasing temperature for all studied DESs. The NRTL and UNIQUAC thermodynamic models were used to correlate experimental LLE data. The interaction parameters were used to plot the phase equilibria of the studied systems. The obtained results indicated that there is good agreement between calculated and experimental tie lines. The Hansen solubility parameters were calculated and used to evaluate the solutes' miscibility in the studied DESs. Results were in good agreement with solubility test results. With the DESs studied in this work, high selectivity was found for benzene and thiophene extraction. Ethanolamine based DESs showed better results for the extraction of aromatics than those based on ethylene glycol.
