ABSTRACT
Soly. is an important physiochem. property of pharmaceutical compds., and cocrystn. is one method used to improve the soly. of drugs. Carbamazepine is a drug from class II, according to the biopharmaceutical classification system, and it forms a cocrystal with nicotinamide. Carbamazepine cocrystd. with nicotinamide was synthesized using the solvent evapn. approach, and its characteristics were detd. using differential scanning calorimetry and powder X-ray diffractometry. The soly. of various solid phases in ethanol + water mixts. was investigated at different temps. using the shake-flask method, and the resulting ppts. were characterized. The soly. of carbamazepine was increased with the addn. of ethanol up to a mass fraction of 0.8. Nevertheless, max. soly. of NIC is obsd. in neat solvent (water). While the soly. of a cocrystal depends on the concn. of the coformer and its stability in the soln.
